Disney Vs the Ancient Myth: Hercules

To keep the Disney movie Hercules fit for a younger audience, the entertaining movie has great departures from the myth. There are several instances of changes, throughout the movie, to make the story more family friendly. Some of these differences are Hercules parents, his major godly nemesis and his 12 labours were tamed down extensively for the Disney movie. The essence of the Hercules myth is still present in the Disney movie, but many of the details had to be changed to keep it fit for a younger crowd. The first major differences in the movie is Hercules parentage. His parents in the original myth are Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene. The myth depicts that while her husband was in the Trojan war, Zeus came down from Mt. Olympus, disguised as her husband, impregnating her with Hercules. The next day her real husband returned and impregnated her with another child. Zeus was actually married to Hera and Disney probably figured adultery was not a good topic for young children. Rather than depict this in the movie they depicted Hera and Zeus as the two loving parents of our hero, Hercules.

Throughout the movie, Hades is depicted as the major villain, seeking to release the Titans and take control of Mt. Olympus. Hades, as lord of the Underworld, is part of the order of the world and is not evil, per the myth. Hades has no interference with Hercules life or labours. It is in fact, Hera, the loving mother in the movie, who poisons Hercules causing him to kill his wife and children. Hera orchestrates the 12 labours that Hercules has to perform, that for anyone else would be impossible. After Hercules proves he was more than capable of completing the 12 labors, Hera gifts him a shrinking shirt, which after he dons it proceeds to squeeze him to

Brett Ratner’s Hercules was based on the adventures of the Greek demigod, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson). According to the film, Hercules was born on a stormy night to the almighty Zeus, a god, and human mother. At this point of his life, Hercules had already completed his legendary twelve labors that followed as a punishment for murdering his own family. Unable to deal with such emotional trauma that resulted from the death of his family, Hercules resorted “to seeking employment as a mercenary”(Gustafson). He, along with a group of six warriors who share their love for battle, end up working as mercenaries for the King of Thrace and “train his men to become the greatest army of all time” (Hercules).…

Hercules did cut corners during his feats and even swore revenge on King Augeias when he refused to pay him. However, most of Hercules’ feats showed great courage and strength. To begin with, Hercules was sent to kill the Nemean lion, a deadly lion with impenetrable hide, as his first labor. He wrestled it to death with his bare hands and skinned the hide of the lion with its own claws to use as armor (Theoi.com). Secondly, Hercules was sent to capture a boar as his fourth labor.…

Growing up, our parents introduce many things into our lives, not only as educational subjects like letters, colors, or numbers, but entertainment as well such as Disney movies. In addition, one specific movie, is in some ways related to the “Mythology” book by Edith Hamilton, which would be the Disney film “Hercules.” Although, the film is in no way similar to the book it does mention some of the characters such as Zeus. The theme of Jupiter’s myth, is mostly about how he thought he was above all;coupled with, him cheating on his wife, Hera. The conflict in my opinion, would have to be the fact that because wherever Zeus’s worship spread to a town where there was already a divine ruler the two of them would slowly fuse into one,…

The last time Disney and Greco-Roman mythology met was with 1997 's horribly inaccurate, yet still charming Hercules. The film underperformed at the box office and was panned by Greek press. Disney and Greco-Roman mythology haven 't mixed since, probably at least partly because the dark subject matter of many Greco-Roman myths simply isn 't suited for a movie aimed at young children. However, many of the western fairy tales used as source material for Disney films share shocking similarities to classical myths. Like Pandora and her box, Snow White 's own curiosity lands her in a coma by means of poison apple, but while Pandora has to live with herself after releasing a whole gaggle of awful things unto man, Snow White is rescued by her…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…
