The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald and published on April 10th 1922. This classic novel was made into a film in 2013 directed by Baz Luhrmann. Baz Luhrmann is an Australian film director, screenwriter and producer best known for his movies Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet and Moulin rouge. The Great Gatsby follows the story of Nick Carraway, and his extraordinary neighbor Jay Gatsby. Nick talks about Jay Gatsby, describing him as the most hopeful man he had ever met. Nick Caraway narrates his encounters with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties
There are many themes that are portrayed throughout the film such as love, hope, wealth, compassion, forgiveness, loyalty. Baz Luhrmann has used many different film techniques to accurately and thoughtfully represent these themes, and portray the film in a modern yet timeless way.

Daisy’s character appears shallow and superficial. Daisy seems to gravitate to the most important people and is easily controlled, however when Gatsby reappears into her life he reminds everything they once had which is romance, freedom and happiness. After Gatsby devoted himself to restore the love and life he and Daisy once shared. She becomes the reasoning for all his decision and the main motivation behind his extravagant parties and achievement of success through criminal activity. Daisy’s focus in life is to be beautiful and charming, her personality and character is boring and non-likeable or relatable. Using symbols in this film was another useful technique that Baz Luhrmann has thoughtfully demonstrated. Creating a unique language of metaphors and symbols help clarify the meaning seen in the Gatsby. Symbolic images help to comprehend thoughts that cannot always be interpreted into
