Cyrus was responsible for uniting Persia under his leadership (Spielvogel 40). While both kings of the Assyrian Empire and the Persian Empire used violence to obtain their respective empires, they both obtained them in different ways. Assyrian rulers were more known for being cruel and using terror tactics during war such as burning their prisoners or cutting off body parts. With every piece of territory that they captured, they took the citizens of that territory as their prisoners. Those that tried to rebel against them were tortured.…

In The Odyssey, Homer writes of Odysseus, a good leader. Odysseus does make mistakes, for example when he leaves Ismarus he says, “I sacked the city, killed the men” and then he takes the riches and wives as plunder (9. 46-47). In this situation Odysseus acts similar to a pirate and goes against the Greek value of order. Also, when Eurylochus and the crew asks to land on the island of the Sun God’s cattle Odysseus says, “I’m one against all, the upper hand is yours” even though this island is where Odysseus was told he will have their greatest disaster (12. 322-323). As for relationship between family and society, it did not help too much when it comes to family ties. Society should have presented perfect families, instead it presented us with dysfunctional ones. Individuals, such as nurses in hospital where Lady Spenta gave birth to Ormus, or nannies they had to look after their children, should have said something about the way they treated their children. Those people were representations of society in the novel, and they did nothing. Nanny in Cama family, the one that was watching for Cyrus and Virus, should have move them when she saw the ball coming, on the day when Sir Darius hit his son with cricket ball, but she just stood, she was too slow and let the ball hit him.…

“For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride”(PRV 59.12). Pride stems from deceitfulness, and those who spread lies become trapped by their own vice; evil befalls those who devise deceit and treachery. Jacob and Odysseus, men from mythologies of radically different religions, both possess the inclination to seize personal distinction through guile and proudly rely on their own virtue and skills. As a result, both of them are beset with hardships. Yet over time they both realize their shortcomings, recognize their dependence on the divinity and with its guidance redeem themselves of the troubles derived from their lies and deceit.…

I think in the story, “Two Friends”, friendship was presented more realistically because of the events that happened in the story. I thought the story “Damon and Pythias” didn’t show a realistic approach to friendship because of how Damon didn’t hesitate and trusted his life to Pythias. Although it’s nice that they deeply care for each other, the part where they would die for each other was too exaggerated. In “Two Friends”, the way Morissot and Sauvage act around each other shows that they’re good friends. “Often they spent half a day side by side…Inevitably they had struck up a friendship.”…
