How Is Cap Portrayed In Gordan Korman's Schooled?

Cap is a thirteen year old hippie who is raised by his grandmother Rain in the novel Schooled by Gordan Korman. Cap doesn’t know much about the world outside of Garland farms. Garland farms is a hippie commune farm. Cap is an only child who has lived with his grandmother all his life. He has never watched TV or even ate pizza because he lives at Garland which is sheltered from the outside world. Now after Rain’s horrible accident he is being thrown into the modern world outside of Garland.
We first meet Cap as he is being questioned by the police because he was driving without a license. Cap’s response was “I drive all the time” because at Garland people do things differently than people in the modern world. The police thought this young boy was clueless and didn’t know anything. After getting to the hospital the doctor says that Rain has broken her hip and will need to stay at the hospital for physical therapy. Cap worries because he wonders who will take care of him when Rain is at the hospital. When the doctors explains to Cap that he can’t stay at Garland he asks “where will I stay”? Cap then gets introduced to Mrs.Donnelly. Mrs.Donnelly has chosen to take care of Cap while his grandmother is in the hospital and now he learns he will have to go to public school.

Cap returns to the middle school dance. When he arrives at the dance a million kids in the dark with candles are all dressed as him. Cap wonders what is going on. As he makes his way to the front everyone is so happy to see that Cap has returned. Cap has gone from being the most different student in school to the most liked person in C Average Middle School. Cap has learned many things in his journey to the Middle School. Cap’s kindness and positive attitude completely changes his school and inspires everyone in it. Cap is a person we can all learn
