Buck is the main character in The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Buck lived on the land of Judge Miller in Santa Clara Valley, California. He has lived all four years of his life here. He is the son of Elmo, a large St. Bernard and Shep, a Scotch shepherd dog. Buck is strong, loyal, kind, and independent. Buck escorts the Judge's daughters on long walks, goes swimming or hunting with the Judge's sons, or plays with the Judge's grandsons. Because of this he is not considered just an ordinary house dog, but a companion to Judge Miller and his family. He even considers himself to be king over all of Judge Miller's land.
