How Is Beowulf Similar

Throughout the novel Beowulf, the main heroine, Beowulf, encounters three different monsters that he fights. The main similarities between these three battles is the end result for Beowulf, the people’s need for a heroine, and the monsters themselves. The main differences of the fights are how Beowulf prepared for battle and what he used to fight the monsters, the setting of the battle, Beowulf’s condition during the battle and its result, and why he decided to kill the monster. Though each battle is significantly different and signifies a different part of the book, each battle has strikingly similar components. The most prominent similarity throughout the battles is the end result for Beowulf. By defeating Grendel, Hrothgar rewarded him with various strikingly beautiful war gear not only for him but for his entire battle clan. After Beowulf murdered Grendel’s mother, he is rewarded with many horses and a large amount treasure and gold. Even though Beowulf dies from a venomous dragon bite, treasures that he and Wulfgar acquired after killing the dragon are hung up at his burning burial. The people’s need for a heroine portrays another significant similarity. Because Grendel was unable to feel joy, he grew extremely jealous of the people in the mead-hall who laughed and ate all night. As a result, he began killing anyone in the mead-hall at night. Anyone who tried to battle Grendel ended up getting killed. For a short while after Beowulf killed Grendel there was peace again, but then Grendel’s mother, in attempts to avenge her son, began killing people. Once again, the kingdom was in
