Beowulf In the three battles Beowulf fought, he justified the characteristics of an epic hero. Being a hero does not mean a person is consummate, like Beowulf he had many flaws. Beowulf was superhuman in strength, bravery, and responsibility. Beowulf was known by many of Geatland for his great accomplishments. He once drove 5 giants off the earth and slayed monsters from the sea one by one. Sailors told stories of the attack on Herot by Grendel, the evil monster that is seeking retaliation. Beowulf knew at that moment, it was his time to repay Hrothgar for helping his father when he was in a bad predicament. Beowulf as a young adult shows that he is a responsible leader of the warriors in Geatland. He grew responsibility by providing safe keeping to his people; defending and protecting them. In the first battle, he presented responsibility by being a leader, he guided his men into battle and across the open sea to Denmark. He directed his men to Herot where they waited for the evil monster to approach in the midst of the night. Right before Beowulf went underwater to finish the dispute, he told his men to stay on the land. He knew the men were not strong enough to make it underwater the length of time he was going to be down there. In the final battle against the dragon, Beowulf told his men that he was going to fight this one alone but would like his men to be there watching and learning things from him. He knew the dragon was too strong for him and his men, until he needed help and only one man stayed, the others fled to the woods. In conclusion to all three battles, Beowulf was a responsible leader by guiding his men and letting them fight only when the time was right. With his great accomplishments as a responsible leader, he was granted the king of Geatland after his uncle and cousin passed

If Beowulf’s sole heroic quality was his strength than when he discovered he was not as strong as the Dragon he would have either fled or called for help. His courage and self-sacrifice is what aided him in his defeat of the Dragon. Even his death is heroic. Beowulf’s death encourages his men to have courage in themselves and at the same time inspires them to new heights. A hero more than anything needs the confidence and courage to defeat a villain.…

No great warrior is without their flaws. Long ago was foretold of a brave and noble warrior named Siegmund. His might had earned him a throne, but alas, “Ruled only with courage. A king born, entrusted with ancient treasures and cities full of stronghearted soldiers, his vanity swelled him so vile and rank that he could hear no voices but his own” (909-912).…

He never lost a battle or challenge and everyone knew his name. Beowulf exemplifies the archetypal epic hero in four ways His characteristics show he is on a quest, performs brave deeds, has superior/ super human strength and is intelligent and courageous, and is significant and glorified. I think the biggest epic hero quality that Beowulf exemplifies is he was always on a quest. The biggest and first quest Beowulf went on was his quest to kill the mead hall monster whose name was Grendel. The king had had trouble with Grendel coming into the mead hall in the middle of the night and killing every person who had passed out, except the king because his throne was protected by God, for many years.…

That being so Beowulf is possessed with superhuman powers which he can use to defeat those monsters. Even the monsters are afraid of his power, and you can see this in Grendel. Grendel “had met a man whose hands were harder; his mind was flooded with fear-but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight hard grip. Grendel’s one thought was to run” (327-330). In the beginning of the story, he tells his feats “I drove five giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth.…
