During the Anglo-Saxon period, England was constantly being invaded by outside groups. This constant attacking from other places developed a warrior society. The character Beowulf lived in such a combat lifestyle. He had to battle evil creatures throughout his life. These battles make Beowulf an epic hero when he defeats the supernatural in many locations: some with help and others without help. Beowulf had many battles in various locations. The initial battle required him to travel to Daneland. He encountered the foul beast named Grendel in the great mead hall, Herot. Grendel approaches from the swamplands “Toward that gold-shining hall” to kill and feast on warriors (291). The subsequent battle is with Grendel’s mother who came to avenge

Beowulf also has them. Beowulf had fought tooth and nail with Grendel. He “Had bewitched all men’s weapons laid spells That blunted every mortal man’s sword” (377-378). Making it impossible for Beowulf or any of his men to fight with a sword. After hearing about the death of King Hrothgar’s best friend murder, Beowulf sought revenge. Men saw a female brute walking in the swamps, and reported straight back to the king and Beowulf. When he heard the news, he knew it was Grendel’s mother. He was aware of a lake that no one would go to because the lake looked monstrous, had no bottom, and was filled with supernatural beasts. As Beowulf was descending into the depths of the water, the she-devil spotted him and attacked him! As she held him in a tight embrace and he, struggling to break free, caught the attention of “a host of sea beasts/stabbing with tusks and teeth” (483-484). Later, successfully killing the demon. With the epic conclusion of his battle against the great dragon, Beowulf had to use all his strength and willpower to succeed. The dragon had to have been five times the size of any man, more venomous than any snake, and burn anything hotter than any fire. He knew before fighting the dragon the dangers he was getting into but still sacrificed his life to save his kingdom. He will always be a great hero. Though Beowulf was just a man, the Gods were in his favor because of his courage and heroism when facing the
