Stereotypically lawyers are liars and money-grubbing which can be true. However, Atticus Finch a lawyer who defends a black man in the award winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, does not fit this stereotype. It is clear that Atticus finch is respectful, courageous and full of integrity. Therefore, Atticus is a good person at heart.
Firstly, Atticus Finch is respectful, Atticus showed respect to everyone. Throughout the novel a lot of people didn't respect Atticus. Mrs. Dubose a cranky old lady told Jem “ your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for” (Lee 102). Jem cut all of Mrs. Dubose's camellias, but Atticus wasn't happy about it. In reply Atticus said to cut a sick old lady's flowers is inexcusable, this shows that Atticus is a respectful person. In addition, Atticus respected Mayella, when he crossed examined her. Atticus's courage is evident when he made the decision to stand guard over Tom Robinson at the county jail. Atticus was brave to take the risk of his own safety when he faced the mob. "You can turn around and go home again" (51). Atticus has a lot of bravery in his tone of voice. Another display of Atticus's courage is when he needed to shoot the rabid dog. Atticus hasn't fired a gun in years, but Atticus was brave enough to take the responsibility to shoot the rabid dog. "Miss and you will go straight into the Radley house" (96), Atticus knowing if he misses there will be consequences. In addition, Atticus took Tom Robinson's case; he risked the chances of criticism by the people of Maycomb. Scouts classmates are already judging that Atticus is defending Mr. Robinson 'Then why did Cecil say you defended niggers?" (75).
