The death of Atticus’s wife , compelled him to hire Calpurnia who was a black woman. Atticus hired Calpurnia because desperately needed assistance with all the household issues he and his wife were able to accomplish at home together and could not be done alone by himself. Calpurnia’s job was not only to cook and clean around the house all day, but also to take responsibility of Jem and Scout, who are Atticus’s children. Whenever Scout and Calpurnia would have a disagreement which was not very often, atticus would always take sides with Calpurnia. Rather than siding with his own child Atticus, would order that scout do as Calpurnia had told her. Atticus tries to show respect and dignity for Mrs. Dubose, despite the fact she often attacks him of being a nigger-lover.Mrs. Dubose also chatizes his kids accomplices to what he is doing. Despite all that was stated Atticus still talks to Mrs. Dubose in a tranquil and reverenet manner. Atticus this so that he can be a good role model for kids, showing them how they should act around arragont and ignorant people like Mrs. Dubose. An example of this in the book is one day as Atticus walked by Mrs. Dubose's house he said "Good evening, Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening."(P.100). Atticus conscienly performs this type of behavior in front of his kids to try and teach them so they can learn that even though persons may be crass and rude, they must not comment back and start an arguement. Atticus is trying to teach his kids to choose their battles and not waste their breath on certain people. Atticus is triying to develop Jem and Scout into people who do not judge individuals and their personally ideas, but somewhat view them with their nature and lapses. All along Atticus was preping an illistation on how to act for for his children. Because Atticus wants scout and jem to grasp how to honor and respect every person the way they are.
