The Tragic Hero of Antigone Given the choice, would one sacrifice loyalty to her family to remain obedient to the law? This was the question asked in the play Antigone of the main character. This play has transcended thousands of years, and people are still talking about the main character, Antigone. She shows awesome mental strength and emotional composure when faced with adversity in this classic Greek drama. Because of the number of deaths in this play, the story of Antigone is considered one of the greatest Greek tragedies written by Sophocles. Antigone is the tragic Heroine in this drama because she has a flaw or error in judgment, a reveal of fortune, she discovers recognition, she shows excessive pride, and her fate was greater than she deserved. …show more content…
Antigone misjudged the sincerity of punishment for burring her brother against Creon’s will. She understands that there will be repercussions for burring her brother, but she never realizes that she will be put to death by her king. One could assume that even if she knew of her punishment, that she would still continue with her plan. However, Antigone would have been better prepared for her demise. This was where Antigone showed a flaw in judgment. Another reason Antigone is the tragic heroine is because she experiences a reveal of fortune. When Antigone realizes that she will die, she thinks her sister will be by her side and take partial punishment. Shortly after the rug is pulled from under her feet when she finds out that her sister will not be with her. Creon will not pass punishment on Ismene because she did not participate in the crime. Antigone’s fortune is now revealed. She will die alone in a cold dark place with no one
