When Chief Miao first tells everyone about the arrests the people only have a vague idea of what homosexuality even is. The room goes silent and the chief explains, “Homosexuality originated from Western capitalism and bourgeois lifestyle (659).” The Chinese authorities are quick to blame outsiders for their woes, as is typical for nearly every society. China as portrayed in this story is in a time of transition. The people work in factories but they still bike to work implying a lack of public transit infrastructure or the economic development for cars to be extremely common. The story takes place in a provincial town and the people have provincial views. As the world is opened up they are opened up to new ideas which can be unsettling. Even homosexuality which had certainly existed in China before is being brought into the light as it becomes more accepted in the world. However, there are still some unknowns which cause people to be frightened as evidenced by when the room goes silent at the mention of it or when Old Cheng refuses to drink out of a cup for fear that hoosexuality might be
