Death and destruction tends to follow Abigail everywhere she goes. Manipulating other people and gaining control is what Abigail find very easy to do. Abigail uses her amazing ability to manipulate someone in thought-out Act 1 “ABIGAIL: I never sold myself! I‘m a good girl—I—(Ann enters with Tituba.) I did drink of the kettle!—She made me do it! She made Betty do it! TITUBA: Abby! ABIGAIL: She makes me drink blood! PARRIS: Blood!! ANN: My baby‘s blood? TITUBA: No—no, chicken blood, I give she chicken blood! HALE: Woman, have you enlisted these children for the devil? TITUBA: No-no, sir, I don‘t truck with the devil.”(Miller13) When Abigail starts to fear that she’s about to get busted for playing around with witchcraft she cleverly manages to blame the whole situation on Tituba. Tituba shocked and in fear as she didn’t see this coming because after all Abigail was the one who convinced Tituba to go out in the forest that night with her to cast the spells. “ABIGAIL: (Hands clasped, eyes closed.) When Elizabeth finds out Abigail is fired. ABIGAIL: John—I am waitin‘ for you every night. “(Miller6). “Abigail still strongly believes that she and John are in love and meant for each other, so when John goes to get the truth out of Abigail John Proctor makes it clear that the affair is over and will never happen again, however in the movie things happened differently. In the forest scene between Abigail and Proctor they kissed which didn’t happen in the play. Instead of the kiss John Proctor says “PROCTOR: (As 3 or 4 persons off-stage begin a quiet chant—a psalm or hymn.) Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I‘ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind—(Takes her arms.) we never touched, Abby.”(Miller6), But after the affair Abigail becomes extremely jealous of Elizabeth Proctor. Mary Warren, the Proctor’s servant made Elizabeth a poppet with a needle in it. Abigail uses her manipulative ways and stabbed herself with the needle and claimed that Elizabeth’s soul did it.”I saw Indians smash my dear parent’s heads on the pillow next to mine”(Miller20). Abigail had to grow up without a real mother or father figure and the love and nurturing that comes from having one.
