It was initially published after her death in the second collection of Dickinson's work, Poems by Emily Dickinson, second series, in 1891. This simple description of hope 'as a bird singing in the soul' is another example of Dickinson’s writing style, which was a take off from Psalms and religious hymns. The term free verse, popularized by 20th century poets, means "a poem with no regular form or meter." In this poem Whitman is letting us know he feels that his life has left a positive result on those who he has interacted with, and dying is okay in his mind. "I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun, I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags. I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love, If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles."
