Meg, whose real name is Margaret, is the oldest of the four girls. At the start of the novel, she is 16 years old. Even without all the latest clothing and fashion accessories, Meg was still a beautiful lady: “...plump and fair, with large eyes, plenty of soft, brown hair, a sweet mouth, and white hands, of which she was rather vain” (7). With being the eldest, Meg had a certain motherly feel to her. She was always teaching and trying to show her younger sisters how to behave like a proper lady. She understood that sometimes things didn’t go how you liked them, but you can’t let it stop you.
