In the first part of the book Immaculee tells about her life before the genocide. Her family was a middle-class family and they all received education, she had three brothers, and her family and herself were part of the Tutsi tribe. There was always tensions between the Tutsi’s and Hutu’s, even though they weren’t a huge threat until the genocide, most Tutsi’s and Hutu were normally friends, or very good acquaintances. Honestly up until I read this book, I had no knowledge of the genocide in Rwanda, and I especially didn’t know it was as tragic as it clearly was. Having a first person point of view made it clear how emotionally draining and tragic it was. If it would not have been written in first person, I would not know any personal aspects or feelings. If it was written in third person, mostly the only thing that would’ve been known would most likely have been facts. Furthermore, facts do not fully explain everything about an event.
