Describe Your Differences In Your Life

The way that I was raised and the way my friend grew up could not be more different. Our family structure growing up was different and it translates to the way we now raise our kids. We are polar opposites. I grew up with a single mother who worked around the clock to support my sister and me. I began to work at an early age, not because my mother forced me to, but because I wanted to help my mother financially in any way I could. I grew up in a humble household, my mother gave us as much as she could, but nevertheless it was humble. Watching my mother work three jobs and never complain about it, instilled in me the work ethic that I have today. Because she was a single mother, I also did not experience all of the freedom that my friends did growing up which helped me stay away from a lot of unsafe things. Growing up in a Latino household, I was told that kids don’t talk when adults are talking and so on. I have instilled that in my kids. My friend on the contrary grew up with her mother and father. Her family was considered middle – high class and although her father was strict, she had a lot more liberty to go do regular teenage things. Her parenting style differs from mines in many ways. It is important for me that he is an open minded person who respects others, even if they don’t share the same values. I also think it’s important that they have responsibilities that help them understand that in life you work to earn what you want. My son started volunteering at the age of 8 at a toy run during the holidays to help him appreciate what he has, to hopefully to minimize the sense of entitlement, but most importantly to find joy in helping others.
