“Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. Life is a precious gift given to us by God himself so you should never dwell on your bad experiences in life.
“He ordered me to lie facedown on my bed and he whipped me.” Her family struggles reflect through these words and even though she was neglected by Father she also was neglected by her stepmother Niang. “The danger is real. She was beaten with a dog whip when she decided to disobey Niang and then was threatened to be sent to an orphanage when she was younger. She was never able to participate in the different activities that her whole family would go to. She finally felt as if she belonged when her cousin Victor stood up for her and decided to not go on the family trip. My whole essay shows that Adeline is a very neglected and troubled girl in a family who doesn't even know she exists. The story of Chinese Cinderella is inspiring to me because I have had family troubles, but it helped me to realize that those terrible memories are in the past and I need to start contemplating my future. Life goes on and you should never let bad experiences come back to haunt you and Adeline didn't. She did exactly that and became an accomplished writer and was happy for the rest of her life without her family. The words that I chose are something that spoke to me

CHAPTER 1 Black and white, black or white. For me, those were never options. In the summer of 1795, in Georgetown, South Carolina, a baby girl was born to Monifa Akisha, or as she was now called Sally, and Master David Tupper. That baby was me, the product of a relationship that no man would ever dare to even think of lest he desired a breathless end in a poplar tree. A key family relationship explored in this book revolves around Pari and Abdullah who are brother and sister. Abdullah is 6 years older than Pari and they have a very strong and close sibling bond that Abdullah attributes to the fact that he basically had to raise and look out for Pari when their mother passed away in childbirth. This is not an ordinary sibling bond because they do everything together and are so intimately connected with the other’s life that when they are separated there is an emptiness, a hole causing them to be dissatisfied with life. Abdullah and Pari are separated at the age of ten and four because Nila Wadhati and Mr. Wadhati buy Pari as their own daughter. Pari experiences “in her life the absence of something, or…

They treat such events as defeat, as a shame or end of the road for them. They fail to realize these ‘bad things’ are just ‘hurdles’ or ‘challenges’ they need to overcome. My idea of resiliency has been changed drastically over this past semester. I have always used the future to drive me through past adversities that I was facing. By focusing on what I still need to do rather than on what happened. In the long term I don’t think this is good for me because I still struggle with a lot of things that have happened – even those that are in the distant past. I think this is because I chose to not talk about things but instead just ignore them and move on.…
