Some examples of this concept are saving money, being nice to bosses and coworkers, going to bed at a reasonable hour. Behavioral experiments have shown that increasing the likelihood of future interactions increases the willingness to share and cooperate. In one such experiment, researchers examined the effect of removing the shadow of the future by going to students through Facebook and asked them to identify some close friends and some fourth degree acquaintances then asked the participants to make decisions about sharing with or helping particular partners with money provided. Sometimes the decision was made anonymous and other times the friend would be informed about the donor’s identity. After thousands of decisions the researchers found that students gave their close friends fifty percent more than acquaintances when remaining anonymous, which suggests that friends’ generosity is not due to the shadow of the future, however it did have some effect because when the identity of the student is given to the recipient, transfers increased for both friends and acquaintances albeit a greater proportion by friends.
