Author of nonfiction book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall”, Anne Fadiman relays the questions to her readers in her preface: “What makes a good parent?” and “What makes a good doctor?” As far as anyone is concerned for the latter question, specifically what makes outstanding health care, Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality would describe quality health care as simply “getting the right care to the right patient at the right time – every time” (). Furthermore, she dissects this simplistic description apart, providing a multilayered perspective. Essentially, the key to quality health care is its three basic dimensions: STRUCTURE, PROCESS, and OUTCOME” ().…
Racism is embedded into essentially every American institution and is nurtured by people who have racist predispositions. Ta-Nehisi Coates in Between the World and Me, writes “the ground we walked was trip-wired. The air we breathed was toxic. The water stunted our growth. We could not get out” (Coates, p. 28).…
“The Strangers That Came to Town” by Ambrose Flack presents the theme of bigotry, prejudice and explores a progression to self-empowerment. Andy and Tom’s decision to poison the Duvtich’s fish is extremely insensitive and irresponsible, and so their father’s decision to punish his boys in the way that he does is suitable. Firstly, because of their capricious action, Andy and Tom should face the equivalent consequences. Even if it’s harsh, the boys’ father has to discipline them in a way where they learn from their mistakes and know to never do such a cruel thing again. Next, although it isn’t relevant to helping Duvitch’s, the way Andy and Tom’s father punishes his children allows for them to build their character and toughen up.…

We’ve all probably heard of the saying ‘everybody makes mistakes.’ While we might sometimes find it reassuring in certain situations, it’s never acceptable with murder. Of course, Flannery O’Connor isn’t claiming that everyone’s guilty of homicide; but her short story ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ makes it clear that everybody’s guilty of something. This evil tale of a pretentious and self absorbed grandmother’s vacation with her family is steeped in connections to Christian faith, such as Flannery’s thematic emphasis that “All have sinned.” From the beginning, she didn’t want to go to Florida and tries to convince her son Bailey that they should go to Tennessee instead, using the excuse that there is an escaped convict on the loose.…
The memoir, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is written to be a letter to describe the future issues to be anticipated for his son in American society. Coates wants to show the reality of the difficult life that must be lived if you are African American in the United States. Ta-Nehisi Coates wants to accurately share the trials and tribulations of the stereotypes of our society to protect his fiveteen year old son, and children all over the nation like his. Children who may not yet understand what they can expect from their futures, just because of their race or identity. The memoir begins by describing the history of violence towards other racial groups from white supremacists.…

The Act of Forgiveness Forgiveness is like a wound that heals over time. Forgiveness is essential to having a healthy relationship. One needs to surpass the past, in order to learn and move on. In reality, it is hard to forgive and forget, but learning from mistakes aids to the healing, the healing that leads to forgiveness coming from the heart. In “The Charmer”, the son Zackery seeks forgiveness from his parents for his reckless actions as an adoescent.…
It was very difficult to pick a short story this week. I like all of them. However. the one I chose was Flannery O’Connor “A Good Man is Hard to find”. For starters, the title caught my attention and was eager to find out the details.…
Craig’s Essay Analysis In Men’s Men and Women’s Women by Steve Crag, he argues about the purpose of using gendered images and portrayals in advertising. Advertisers look to target audience such as men and women who are at home watching daytime televisions on weekdays or those who are at home on the weekend watching sports. Prime time (evening) is a good time to reach women who are outside of home and also the men who fall in this category. These gendered programs and portrayals are constructed for the desires of the target audience to watch.…
“A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor, is a prime example postmodernism. Perhaps the most notable characteristic of postmodernism in this piece is abandonment of the “right” moral code or the “truth”. Postmodern writers often wrote about many truths, rather than one universal “truth” that had been practiced before. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the grandmother has her own definition of what is “good”, which is based on appearances and stereotypes, and is likely consistent with the moral code of many during the modernist period. However, the grandmother puts her family and herself in danger, proving her moral code to be faulty.…
We're all familiar with Nicholas Sparks and his heart warming, but predictable movies. After watching for no less than 20 minutes, we already know how it’s going to end. “How I Met My Husband” by Alice Munro is quite the opposite. “How I Met My Husband” is not the average love story. This story provides a good example of both situational and dramatic irony.…
In The Flowers by Alice Walker, Myop’s innocence is emphasized by many literary devices, such as, symbolism, metaphor, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, tone, and imagery. Walker named the main character, Myop on purpose as it is short for myopia, which is the scientific term for, nearsightedness. This is an example of symbolism because in most parts of the story, Myop is a very innocent and pure girl, and is not able to see farther than the idealistic beauty of her childhood. To Myop, the harvesting of crops “[makes] each day a golden surprise” (Walker, 1).…
