The success of an argument depends on a writer’s ability to convince his/her readers. I was confused about how to effectively develop an idea to persuade readers to adopt my belief and value. After taking this class, I realized that I have to present a well-reasoned argument with supporting evidence and opposing ideas on a debatable issue. Specifically, argumentative essays could be developed through applying several techniques of argument including citation, statistics, facts, analogies, opposition, and personal experience. For instance, in “Caffeinated Energy Drinks: A Growing Issue,” every middle paragraph has a clear topic sentence. I also cite authorities and statistics, use my personal experience, and acknowledge opposing views to demonstrate the negative impacts of caffeinated energy drink on young people.
