As a person who wants to be an animation designer creating and developing images and effects for websites and video games, I have acquired much knowledge of computer science and design. However, I made less improvement in my English academic writing. After receiving so many negative feedbacks on my reports and papers from my instructors advising me to strengthen my writing skills, I, as an international student, decided to take a writing class which is designed for native speakers of English. This writing course completely changes my attitude toward English academic writing. I believe that my portfolio meets the requirements of clear competence because I made a tremendous improvement in composing introduction/conclusion, constructing thesis statement, and developing an argument.

The success of an argument depends on a writer’s ability to convince his/her readers. I was confused about how to effectively develop an idea to persuade readers to adopt my belief and value. After taking this class, I realized that I have to present a well-reasoned argument with supporting evidence and opposing ideas on a debatable issue. Specifically, argumentative essays could be developed through applying several techniques of argument including citation, statistics, facts, analogies, opposition, and personal experience. For instance, in “Caffeinated Energy Drinks: A Growing Issue,” every middle paragraph has a clear topic sentence. I also cite authorities and statistics, use my personal experience, and acknowledge opposing views to demonstrate the negative impacts of caffeinated energy drink on young people.
