How has your perspective been changed?
My perspective has been broadened throughout the duration of the course. In areas where my previous knowledge had been incomplete, this course filled such gaps and caused me to have a holistic view of project management. However, there are a couple of areas where I feel my perspective was altered due to the material of the course. One such area is team dynamics and communication. With regards to team dynamics, Berkun’s (2008) book completely changed my perspective with regards to the value of informal hallway interaction. Previously I did not view this as necessary or valuable, but after reading his insights I understand the strategic value of these interactions. Previously, I felt that the project manager should send information to team members on a need to know basis. However, this could become problematic as team members might not have the big picture to make informed choices that could adversely affect the project quality. As such, it is critical for all team members to have the relevant information to ensure that team members make decisions in various phases of the project based on the full picture and not just the slice of information that is at their disposal. With that said, the project manager still must balance the need to keep all team members informed without inundating team members with information overload.
