Retention Rate - Brain vs. Camera In the novel “Outside Lie Magic” by Harvard professor John Stilgoe, Stilgoe explains how the vast majority of people just stumble through their day to day activities, and in turn stumble through their lives without looking up and noticing all of the minor details of life. He discusses how you are able to walk the same path every single day, but by focusing you are able to discover something new every single time you pass through. It is that focus that allows you to get a better understanding of your surroundings and is why you should live more in the moment and not worry about the pictures and the need to impress others. Stilgoe challenges our minds to work like they did before the advent of digital technology,…

Comparison/Contrast Essay My life is like a camera because I focus on what's important, I capture the good times and I develop from the negatives. When capturing an image, a camera focuses on the most important thing in its field of view, the object (Toussaint, J.-P, & Smith, 2008). In the same way, I also have many things that need my attention but I deliberately choose to focus on my children, which are the most important things I have.…

Paumgarten shows signs of this exact same positive effect that comes from cameras. One for instance is stated by Paumgarten “ Apparently, psychologists and neurologists have discovered that photos or video of an event are more effective than notes or conversation at helping people remember an experience” (pg.337), which basically means that cameras have a positive outcome and will have a long-term effect. The connection between the two quotes that the innovation of cameras and art have positive…

I am summarizing, critiquing, and evaluating the scholarly article, Promoting Positive Affect through Smartphone Photography (Yu Chen, Gloria Mark & Sanna Ali, 2016), and the popular article, Science Says Selfies Can Make You Happier And More Confident (Lindsay Holmes, 2016). Researchers have realized that taking photos has become ubiquitous (Chen et al., 2016). They decided to research how photography captured with smartphones can be used to help people increase their mood. To carry out this research, they conducted a four week study that had forty-one participants. Each one person had to take one photo a day depending on which group they were in (a selfie photo smiling, a photo that makes you happy, and a photo that would make someone else…

Eating behaviors are considered key elements of health. Through the kinds of food that we eat and the way that we eat it, we can consume the nutrients that allow us to grow and develop (add ref). However, eating behaviors can also contribute to several diseases due to either a lack or an excess of certain nutrients and energy. Eating behaviors—especially those related to an unhealthy diet (increased intake of food with high amounts of fat, salt and sugars, and low amounts of vitamins and minerals)— have been noted by the WHO as “major modifiable determinant of chronic disease” (World Health Organization & Food and Agriculture Organization, 2003, p. 2), implying that it is a reversible condition. The unhealthy diet is considered a part of “Western…
