Nathan McCall’s Them tells a riveting story of the Old Fourth Ward, a neighborhood in Atlanta. Whether being a victim or an intruder, they can’t escape gentrification. Focusing on the characters, Barlowe Reed and nephew Tyrone, the men describe women so flamboyantly that it almost makes one uncomfortable. McCall’s bigot use of various phrases and depictions of women throughout the novel brings forth the hypothesis that Nathan McCall perhaps has an issue with women [entirely].…
