I found a lot of musicians who still composed, sang or performed during wars to keep people’s spirits high. As Kate Kennedy states in the article World War One and Classical Music, “Ivor Gurney returned after 15 months at the front, having been shot and gassed, but with five of his most enduring songs, some written practically in the front line. One mud-spattered manuscript, a setting of ‘By a Bierside’, was written by the light of a stump of candle in a trench mortar emplacement (Kennedy).” I think this clip from the article is important because it shows the determination that the composer, Ivor Gurney, had to create music.
