How Has John Adams Changed American Politics

John Adams, the second president of the United States, swayed the nation with his patriotic beliefs and opposition to British rule. At a time when American colonists’ hostility towards British Parliament grew, John Adams assured the colonists of their rights and independence throughout his campaign. The election of 1796 changed American politics as it was the first election in which there were opposing sides. The Federalists, headed by Alexander Hamilton and the Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson were the two political parties. John Adams had been expected to win as he was highly revered throughout the country for being George Washington’s choice for vice president. With the vote of seventy-one electoral, John Adams won the election by a three vote margin proving the presidential prediction to be correct. Though the crisis with France hurt John Adams’s relationship with Congress, they did agree on the Alien and Sedition Acts which was a major political decision. John Adams had been faced with many tough decisions throughout his presidency. Some decisions improved America while others may have worsened conditions for the country. The split of political views in the Federalist Party and increasing support for Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic Republican Party caused Adams to lose in the 1800 election, therefore allowing him to only serve one term.
