According to Worldgolf.com, the game gained ground when important people such as King Charles I introduced it to their own country(np). This game was so popular it distracted many soldiers from training while they were preparing for an English invasion that they had to ban it. Many people disagreed with the ban and the others ignored it. The ban didn’t get lifted until 1502, nearly 50 years after the first ban had been passed in parliament. Golf didn’t even have rules until 1744 and they were made by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers(igfgolf.org, np). The best golf course of that time and one of the few golf courses of that era was the Lieth Golf Course. It was a course King Charles the I played on quite a bit and it was home to the first international tournament. It was when the Duke of York and James Patterson representing Scotland played and beat two English men. Golf was first brought into the USA by William Burnett, the Governor of MA. Before too long many clubs were formed such as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1834. Then 50 years later the USGA or United States Golf Association was founded in New York.
