How Has Community Service Impacted My Life

Decent Essays
Service is something that is very important to me because it positively impacts my life. Working to help others makes me feel happy because I take pleasure in helping others. When I helped at a hypothermia shelter, it was a nice feeling to be able to give people food who couldn’t get it otherwise, and to see their smiles while I served them. I believe that community service has made me a better person through giving me opportunities to work with people who are less fortunate than me. Whether it be through helping learning, serving food, or just overall helping take care of children, I think that the service that I have given has positively impacted others’ lives. In reality service to me should be something that benefits both parties involved,

Community service means to help out those who are in need. To give some of your own time to be able to assist those who are less fortunate. During the Special Olympics I went with my AFJROTC group to volunteer our time to help out with the event. We helped out to run the games and make sure everything ran smooth for the participants. It was an enjoyable event but what really made it worthwhile was to see all of the kids being so excited to be able to compete in the event.…

I have completed many hours of community service and I believe that it is my responsibility to involve myself in my community in any way possible. Getting involved in the community helps build a strong character and it teaches certain values that will benefit other communities. Speaking of community improvement, it is also my responsibility to pay any taxes set for me by our state and federal governments. Without taxpayer money, it would be impossible to maintain many of our most precious and crucial government funded organizations. If the American people allowed those organizations to fade away, we would be hurting our country and helping ourselves.…

Service, while it does benefit me, is meant to help those around me. Service is valuable in high school because it teaches me the importance to aid others in every way that I can. Service also provides a happiness that I will carry throughout my life until the day I die. The joy on a child's face at a spring carnival when they finally win a prize, or when they look in the mirror at the creation you painted upon their face benefit my soul. The smiles on the faces of people who wander chilly New Albany streets when they hear your carols ring out around them helps to make me realize the importance of community.…

Not only is the participant regarded in higher esteem, the participant gets to take part in a satisfying experience that helps others in their community. Many people believe that there is nothing they can do to help in their communities, but that is simply not the case. There are opportunities in every community; you just have to dig deeper and look for them. I think the best part about community service is that you get to see your few minutes, hours, or days make a change for the better. In the past years I have participated in a variety of service activities that I have thoroughly enjoyed.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

According to an article posted by the University of Minnesota, students in service learning benefit academically, professionally, and personally (Benefits of Service-Learning). Some of the ways students benefit themselves are by increasing understandings of topics outside the classroom, gaining hands-on experience, and learning more about social issues and the root causes of those social issues (Benefits of Service-Learning). Students are also able to develop better skills in critical thinking and problem solving. By testing their skills and interests outside of the classroom, students develop new personal relationships and are able to connect with professionals and new networks of people (Benefits of Service-Learning). All of this can satisfy and grow a better urge for volunteering and service…
