The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892, with nine players. During the game there was only one point made from one of the teams. The one shot was made from a shot longer than a NBA 3-pointer. When the rules for basketball had been made, there was no specific number about how many players had to be on a team.
