When it comes to GRIT, growth is someone’s ability to better themselves. Not being satisfied with your intelligence, or physical abilities. Embrace your lack of knowledge because even if you are an expert at one thing there will always be new concepts or designs. You should communicate or even teach others what you know because they may have a different perspective that you have never thought of before. I scored a 74 on the growth section of my GRIT Gauge which was right on par with the average. To improve my growth I plan on stepping back from areas in my life try to look at the big picture. I want to look not only at weak areas but strong areas as well. Talk to other people and ask how they accomplish a task. Perhaps their approach is better …show more content…
In my experience, robustness is the ability to not get discouraged when something doesn’t go the way you thought or hoped it would. When I think of robustness I imagine the scene from the movie Rocky Balboa (2007) where Sylvester Stallone is talking to his son in the street. In this scene he says, “it ain 't about how hard you hit. It 's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That 's how winning is done!” This is exactly what robustness means to me. Robustness is about not getting down on yourself or making excuses, but rather taking responsibility for whatever set back you encountered and keep striving towards your goal. I ended up with at middle of the road 65 robustness score. This will be the most important area of the GRIT gauge for me and my classmates. I made mistakes last semester that I need to take responsibility for and have a strong robustness ability to move forward with my educational …show more content…
I learned that my note taking abilities in class were far below where they should have been. I always took notes but they were so unorganized that I might as well have not taken them at all. Now I know how to utilize different types of notes for different situations and classes. Secondly, the tool of time management. You would think that from prior military service that I would be on top of everything but once I got to school I quickly learned that wasn’t the case. Now I keep a daily planner that I would lose my mind if I lost. I bring it with me nearly everywhere that I go and write down any deadlines or any other information that I need to remember. Lastly, the fact that I have my goals written down has changed my perspective dramatically. They are written down in the front of my planner where I can see them every day. They serve as a small reminder to keep striving and using my GRIT abilities to get closer to them. I believe that I have not hit a dead end in my pursuit of a higher education, but that it is only another obstacle I have to overcome, and by utilizing all of the areas of GRIT I can

Grit is learning how to talk about what you’ve accomplished and being able to surpass the expectations of those around you, while also overcoming new challenges. Angela Lee Duckworth discusses how good looks, social intelligence, or even a person’s IQ aren’t the main factors that determine if they will be how successful; a key part to a successful life is grit, some students don’t have “grit”; while others do. One can look at their individual works and it will be obvious. Students who have grit are sticking with their future plans and working hard to making those plans into a reality. As a person who is going to be a first generation college student, my journey towards obtaining a higher education has been challenging to say the least. Neither my father or mother finished high school, but when I was very young, my mother, who struggled with alcoholism, left my father and I, and he has raised me by himself ever since. Over the course of my childhood, my father did everything in his power to make ends meet through working long hours and multiple jobs so that I could have the opportunities that he never had. Because of this, at an early age I learned to do without certain things and when I was old enough, I got a job of my own to help provide for myself and my father. As a result of these things, sometimes it was difficult to do well in school and other activities, but I always found a way to succeed through diligence and time management skills.…

At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

I would say that I learned the most about what it really means to have time management after this semester. Entering my first semester of college I had blind faith in the University, and myself because I believe everything would just work out and I would pass because it was meant to be. However, fate and hope are no the things to help you life as a new college student. The drive to wake up, attend class, finish homework, and accept the new responsibility that had been placed in my novice hands diminished greatly as the non-academic temptations became to creep in my head. I must be honest with you and let you know that I did cave and willingly participate in the sweet release of social experiences.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
