“Volcanologists have identified the existence of more than 40,000 volcanoes on Earth”(1). Volcanoes are not the only factor in the changing of the Earth’s surface. There are multiple reasons for the Earth to change. Geoprocesses including tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquakes all contribute to affect the Earth and its surface. First, tsunamis produce transformations in the Earth’s surface. A tsunami is caused by an earthquake in the ocean. In 2011, a tsunami in Japan wiped out homes and killed thousands of people. In the article “Dangerous Tsunami Off of U.S West Coast,” it displays the end results of a tsunami. Rong- Gong Lin II and Rosanna Xia state,“It also damaged a nuclear power plant, causing a meltdown and spreading dangerous radiation in the area”(1). This demonstrates how capable a tsunami can be by affecting the Earth with hazardous chemicals. …show more content…
A series of volcanic hills, seemingly extinct, still manages to effect the surface of the Earth. In the article, “The Hills are Alive, Warns study of Volcanic Activity Near Rome,” Shannon Hall states, “Even without new magma entering the system, the old magma continues to heat the ground above. This leads to carbon dioxide release and ground deformation”(1). This concludes that although a volcano that has no previous evidence of eruption, it still obtains potential to alter the Earth’s surface. Shannon Hall continues by saying, “New satellite information and other evidence reveals that the hills have swelled by 50 meters over the last 200,000 years, which is likely caused by magma slowly seeping toward the surface”(2). This shows how changes underneath the surface, over time, affects the surface of the
