“In the hierarchy of relationships, friendships are at the bottom. Romantic partners, children - all these come first.” Julie Beck refers to this in the article “How Friendships Change in Adulthood” in the very first sentence, only because it is one of the most true things stated about friendships ever. Friendships in everyday life are overlooked. I know I certainly overlook my friends and go to my loved ones first in any situation I am in. However, we depend on them more than we know. Maybe it is them lifting you up when you feel bad, or something as small as them having your back when you forget to bring a pen to class. That stage in life with the most height are middle aged people. “By middle-age, people have likely accumulated many friends from different jobs, different cities, and different activities who do not even know each other at all.” With time you accumulate many memories, and those memories begin to pile on, and they have so many people in it. This is what has happened with my dad. I do not know how many stories I have heard about a “family friend,” the number of stories goes on and on. These types of relationships that my dad tells me about as Julie Beck points out falls into three categories: active, dormant, and commemorative. I have heard stories about all three groups. Friendships are active if you stay in touch regularly, like if you could call them for emotional support and it would not be wierd, and where you almost know everything about what is happening in their life, as well as them knowing everything about yours. A dormant friendship has history. Maybe you have not talked in awhile, but you still think of that person as a friend. You’d be happy to hear from them and if you were in the area, you would definitely meet up. Then a commemorative friend is not someone you expect to hear from, or see, maybe ever again. They were important in your earlier life, and now they are just a memory, but you still consider them a
