FIFA: Abusing Report

Improved Essays
The topic I chose to write about is how FIFA is abusing people in order to build their stadium for the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In 2015 allegations were brought against the organization FIFA(which stands for Federation, International, Football, Association), which stated that they are forcing migrant workers to stay in cramped conditions, pay large fees, being lied about how much they will earn, not being paid, and getting their passports confiscated. These allegations came from approximately 240 migrant workers who are mainly from Bangladesh, India and Nepal, who complained to the Amnesty International February and May of 2015. In 2014 David Howman, the director of the World Anti-Doping Agency, said that he believes that 25 percent …show more content…
Furthermore Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy are the people who are in charge of sculpting the stadium for the 2022 world cup. Essentially the Qatari law was created to require companies that are working on World Cup projects to better standards for workers in the future. I personally feel as if this reflects how FIFA and their sponsors do business with their workers. The sponsors should be pressured by FIFA to address the exploitation of workers on Khalifa stadium, and tell the public how they will further prevent the abuse of workers for future world cups. The infrastructure costs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar are expected to surpass 200 billion US dollars. Also I believe that workers can be paid a more fairly wage since the cost to build the stadium is 200 billion dollars, there is no reason why these workers should be living in poor conditions as they work on creating the stadiums for the 2022 World …show more content…
Additionally there needs to be rules established that workers should have proper living conditions, have breaks so that they’re not working out in the heat all day, they should also be allowed to see their family anytime they would like, and lastly they should be given a fair wage and not have their passport revoked when they wat to leave the country. All of the information above is reflected on FIFA and how they believe workers should be treated, I think that if there isn’t a stop to this than it will keep occurring at future FIFA events. I used to be a huge advocate for FIFA but after researching all of my information for Qatar and how they’re mistreating their workers it has fully changed my mind, I won’t support an organization who treats their workers like slaves and doesn’t allow them to leave the country to see their families after a catastrophic event

Both Jeff Ballinger and Nike both have biased approaches to business and are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Nike is a corporation that considers itself not responsible for its contractors and treatment of its workers and has little regard for CSR. Ballinger on the other end is a crusader for closing the gap for low paid worker’s wages and holds corporations responsible for CRS. Others argue that with all of the time and hard work that athletes put in, they deserve at least some sort of compensation. Hopefully, an agreement is reached so that athletes are not given any more than they already receive. When someone thinks about and analyzes all that athletes receive, they would understand that athletes are given so much already. It would be unfair to all of the students that are not athletes and even unfair to the athletes themselves. It is setting them up for a future where they will want money to satisfy all of their needs, when the fact is, they do not really need…

The modern Olympics was also progressively becoming shaped by economic interests as shown by documents 5, 7, and 9. The Olympics offered the prospect of great economic prosperity and commercial gain to companies that sponsored them and to countries that hosted them. The mayor of Tokyo, Ryotaro Azuma, explains in document 5 that the Olympic Games of 1964, which Japan hosted, helped the country recover economically from their defeat in World War II and eventually grow as a world trade power. This was beneficial to international trade and encouraged other countries that upon seeing Japan’s gain from playing host to the Olympics may have desired a similar rise in trade and economic influence. The Olympics were a means of improving a country’s economy…

Some of the issues that critical theories present are the lack of finances for heavily equipped sports and violence in sports. For example, if an individual wants to play football they will have to buy a whole uniform which consist of shoulder pads, thigh pads, a helmet, cleats, a mouth piece, jerseys and pants which can be costly for a person who can’t afford the required equipment. The alternative in playing basketball or handball only require one equipment for both sports which is a ball that is cost effective for many where accessibility can be the playground to enjoy leisure time with no restrictions. The New York Post published an article with the headline reading, “FIFA actually has the nerve to ask US for its bribe money back.” Once again, this is an example of how shameless FIFA are acting and how they think that what they did was not deserving of consequences. On the contrary, the countries that have been awarded the rights to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup’s, take the side of the officials that have been banned.…
