Summary #1: Chapter 1 – Behaviorism (How Fiction Affects Behavior) Behaviorism is defined “As an approach to psychology that features the study and careful measurement of observable behaviors” (Cacioppo, p. ). In the article Empathy by the book: How fiction affects behaviors by Susan Pinker she explains that if everyone reads more fiction books that they will be able to empathize with others around them. Through a study completed by the University of Toronto Dr. Oatley concluded ’The more fiction people read, the better they empathized” (“How Fiction Affects Behavior”, 2016). Unfortunately, nonfiction doesn’t not affect empathy in the same way as fiction books. Empathy is important because it allows us to draw connections and create bonds with others so that we are able to have a better understanding of ourselves and others around us. By studying behaviorism through readers, we are able to find more ways that others are able to learn important skills such as empathy, sympathy and compassion.
