How External Influenced My Life

As a little girl, I always found myself pondering who I was, and what made me this way. At the time I didn't give thought to culture or race, I thought more of why my thought process was this certain way and wondered why every person must have their own different voice in their head. As I got older and began to grow through new knowledge and experiences, I then understood that we simply do not have this magical thought process that just suddenly appears. I realized that the way we think, the way we view ourselves and others are all influenced by our upbringing which is heavily based on external influences, which include such things as environment and culture. Today I realize that most of my beliefs and thought process have been heavily influenced by my home environment. However when asked with how I identify myself, I will stubbornly tell most people that I am Sabrina Scalfo, and I am simply me, with my own set of beliefs. Yet I know that these beliefs and the way I view certain aspects of life were all developed through …show more content…
I remember every year on November 11th as I'd go to school my parents would tell me: "don't bow your head for the soldiers, bow your head for all the innocent civilians and children who died in war." They taught me that there are no heroes in war and that there is no such thing as freedom of speech. At first, I didn't understand them, but as I got older I began to realize how absolutely right they were. Today I truly respect their ideology and have taken it myself. As well, social media like the White Poppies for Peace Campaign has further influenced my attitude on war. As a result, I am proud to call myself a pacifist and proud to wear a white peace poppy throughout November. Today I find myself speaking of anti-war, peace efforts, and true freedom of speech with great passion to my parents and those close to

Sui Sin Far, in her famous essay “Leaves from the Mental Portfolio of an Eurasian,” proclaims that it is more important for someone to be an individual than it is for someone to be a member of a culture or society. I have to agree with this statement for more reasons than just one. Although culture may be important being true to one’s self will always be of higher value in my eyes. An additional reason as to why I agree with Sin Far is the fact that one may not always be able to relate to one’s self. My final reason for agreeing with Sin Far’s statement is that a nation is temporary and you can always leave a nation, but you may never leave yourself, individuality will be with you forever.…

In our society, it is inevitable not to consider the judgment of others towards how we look and how we behave. How men turned into men and how women turned into women was largely influenced by the social construction of sex and gender. Social constructions dictate who we become. As Ruth Hubbard argued in her article, each of us writes our sexual script out of the range of our experiences. None of this script is inborn or biologically given.…

As you grow, society forces you to observe the difference between people not for who they are but for how they look. With time your opinion began to be molded into boxes of black, white, yellow, red as if humans can be categorized by their skin color. I never thought of myself as black or white or yellow, for me, it didn’t matter where my ancestors had come from or their language or their culture—I was me. It might have been ignorance on my part, to think that these things should not define me as a person but they did. I was twelve-years-old when I came to the United States, young and excited for a new beginning, a new adventure.…

Personal identity is a common philosophical struggle that humans face. What makes us who we are, and why are we here are two crucial questions we have debated over since the dawn of civilization. From birth, we are constantly gaining experience and knowledge not only to survive but also to create our own world-view. Even though we are complex creatures, we have a tendency to categorize the world around us into simple boxes.
