How Epigenetic Changes In Family Life

Epigenetics means changes in genes that do not affect DNA sequence. These changes might be affected by the exposure every human being has to a different environment and circumstances which leads to changes in their genes, yet these changes do not change that person’s DNA. After interviewing my family, I discovered that I am most at risk for asthma, dust and humidity allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension and migraine. Having a twin sister helps me understand the meaning of epigenetics more clearly. Both of my parents and my sister are asthmatic and have dust and humidity allergies, yet I have never suffered any of these diseases. On the other hand, I have inherited migraines from one of my grandmothers since a very young age. Lastly, I am also very likely to inherit rheumatoid …show more content…
For example, I understand why I suffer from migraines and my twin sister doesn’t. Although we were raised together and the same way, my sister inherited my mother’s personality, while I inherited my father’s and my grandmother’s personality whom both suffer from mild anxiety. Thus, I understand why I am usually stressed and often have a migraine. Furthermore, I understand now why family members usually do not suffer from the same disorders even though they inherit similar DNA sequences. In addition, it is clear why my sister suffers from the same allergies as my mother and my father since not only is she susceptible to those disorders, but she is more sensitive to them due to inheritance and environmental situations, in addition to acquiring characteristics closer to those of my mother, whereas I acquired characteristics from my father and my
