Teaching Philosophy

Education is defined as the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction at a school or university (Oxford Dictionaries, 2016). Education can be taught in many different ways. As a teacher my goal is to give my students the best education they can receive and to stick to curriculum while also being flexible and focusing on the needs and experiences of my students. My philosophical teaching approach is a mix between two, essentialism and progressivism. Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy, while essentialism is teacher-centered. I believe that it is important for my students to learn the curriculum that I am supposed to teach, but also to find their meaning in life and in the classroom. It is my job to make sure that parents know the things their children need in order for the student to be comfortable in a home and student environment. I will be able to speak with parents and let them know ways to help their children with lessons plans, homework, etc., without making the parent feel as if I am telling him/her how to control their own child. Teachers sometimes have to move onto different grade levels and adjust to different classroom settings. I will always be ready for change and know the stages of development for each grade level I am teaching. Every grade level and age group grow in a different way. For example, on a school observation, the pre-school teacher had to know how young children’s minds learn, the way they grow, and the way that they communicate, in order to be successful in the classroom. The teacher clearly knew the stage development and was able to help the children as needed. It is important to realize the social issues going on in a classroom. As a teacher, I should know the difference between the normal social issues and the severe social issues. Normal social issues include things like sadness, loneliness, and jealousy in friendships and nervousness when talking in front of the class, or starting the new school year. Severe social issues include things like being abused at home, severe depression and outrages of anger. In order to address these social issues, I will always pay close attention to my classroom. Young children are known to give off warnings signs (an example being: stomach aces to avoid social interactions). A key to doing these things is for me to pay attention to the way my students are treated by others. If a child is never invited to play dates/birthday parties, a child is teased constantly, if a
