Edema is swelling caused by extra fluid trapped in the bodies tissues. Edema can affect anywhere on the body but is most common in the arms, hands, legs, ankles, and feet.
Signs of edema include: swelling or puffiness of the tissue under your skin, stretched or shiny skin, skin that remains a dimple after being pressed for several seconds, and increased abdominal size. Signs of pulmonary edema are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and chest pain.
Edema in the legs can happen from long periods of time sitting such as a long flight. Persistent leg pain and swelling could be signs of a potential blood clot in the veins called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT for short. Edema could also be the result of eating too much salty food, premenstrual
