Domestic violence is what destroys most peoples home. About 60% of this violence happens at one’s home. The immediate cause of homelessness for many women is because of the domestic violence. “8% of families were homeless because of domestic violence in 2008 (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2008). 39% of cities cited domestic violence as the primary cause of family homelessness (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2007).” (Domestic Violence and Homelessness, page 1) “One study in Massachusetts found that 92 percent of homeless women had experienced severe physical or sexual assault at some point in their lives, 63 percent had been victims of violence by an intimate partner, and 32 percent had been assaulted by their current or most recent partner.” (Domestic Violence) “Survivors of domestic violence have both short- and long-term housing needs. Immediately, survivors require safe housing away from the abuser. Ultimately, the family requires access to safe, stable, affordable housing.” (Domestic Violence) It’s depressing knowing that most people you see homeless on the side of the road, can be because of domestic violence. It may be hard for them to find another place where they’re welcomed. One in ten calls made to alert police of domestic violence is placed by a child in the home. One of every three abused children becomes an adult abuser or victim.
