hypothesis:
If the amount of time for water flow increases then more dirt should erod because the water pressure will remove the vegetation from the river bank due to no protection from the vegetation the river will increase in size.

Procedure: create a stream in a stream table by putting it at an angle(downhill), make a path out of soil for the water to flow through. See image (take picture of the pump)
Add vegetation in the stream bank if there isn't any by adding leaves, grass and pack it tightly record initial mass of dirt.
Turn on the water pump, Time the water for at least 30 seconds to see how long the water takes to go through the river. weigh the amount of water/ dirt mixture after
Repeat steps 1-3 but remove the vegetation.

Materials:
Stream table and water pump
Dirt / leaves / grass

Three different areas of the Toomuc creek were chosen based on the judgment that they would represent the whole creek. From each area, a sample of water from upstream and downstream was taken from varying depths – the surface, middle and bottom. Prior to utilizing any equipment, it was washed with distilled water to rid the contaminants that may have been present. The labelled sample jar was then attached to the sampling pole and was immersed into the creek and was taken out when the jar was full. The thermometer was immediately used to measure the temperature and a pH indicator strip was inserted for five seconds and then removed.…

The greatest human impact on the water quality of Barnegat Bay is irrigation. Irrigation occurs when water is added to land or crops in order to aid in growth. In the northern parts of the bay, where “peak nitrogen levels have been recorded”, many homeowners continually use lawn fertilizers which carry nutrients in the runoff produced (Seitzinger 6). In addition to being a problem in the northern Barnegat Bay area, in the past few years, “the pollution problem is now being magnified by increased development in southern Ocean County, creating the same ecological hazard in the lower part of the bay” (Moore 1). This contributes to nutrient loading, which is when an ecosystem has a high amount of nutrients entering it in a short amount of time.…

The most likely causes for the dead zone in the Great Lakes are the amount of phosphorus nitrogen and fertilizer running off into the lake. When the lake becomes rich in these nutrients and you add warmer temperatures into the equation you can expect an algal bloom. Once the bloom dies the decomposition depletes much of the oxygen in the water which is severe because of the size of the algal bloom. This coupled with things such as low water inflow and temperature of water are the most popularly believed reasons for dead zones in Lake Erie.…
