This also happened to be the location of the only television in my home as a child. I have an old brother and younger sister, so my mom would allow us 30 minutes for each to choose the show we wanted to watch. This worked well, unless my brother would put on his boring sci-fi show. Over the weekend, my mother would take us to Blockbuster, my brother sister and I would be each be allowed to pick a movie of our choice, we then would watch them together over popcorn and fruit snacks. I think I watched TV as a child because it was entertaining, interesting, and it was a way my family spent time together.
As a teenager, my priorities were sports, hanging out with friends, and church. I rarely watched tv, but when I did it was mainly shows like Real World and That 70’s Show. Occasionally, I would usually pick up a movie from local video store, or go to the movie theaters. My sister and I would usually watch a movie together, in our room that we shared. 3 years ago I canceled my cable TV, and since then have resorted to online streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Technology advances have shifted my viewing habits in a couple of ways. My family and I occasionally gather if front of the main TV in the living room, but with the mobility of my smartphones and tablet, I can watch my shows in any room of the house, while lying in bed, on a work break, or even while getting my nails done. In fact, a report entitled “TV and Media”, 72% of viewers use a mobile device to view video content as least once a week, and 42% use it away from home. Now-a-days, I am able to watch a much larger array of programs by using Netflix or Hulu, while cable TV is somewhat restrictive. On the contrary, I am much more often watching television alone. Watching my movies and tv shows on a tablet or smart phone is much more convenient, allowing me to watch what I want, when I want, without having to worry about missing out an episode because of play-times, all the while saving
