A Raisin in the Sun was a play taken in 1959 in Chicago’s Southside. Lorraine Hansberry wrote A Raisin in the Sun based on her own experience as a young black woman living in a white neighborhood. Walter Lee Younger appears to be an angry black man and a very mean individual who takes out his anger on both Ruth (wife) and Lena (mama). The moment Walter feels some of the weight that mama has been carrying her entire life and he starts to see her crumble, he decides to rise to the occasion and become the man he was intended to be. It is so demeaning and it slowly breaks her down as a woman. When Ruth went to the doctors and found out she was pregnant, she was devastated and nervous. It was taking a toll on her and confusing her in more ways than just one. Ruth wanted so badly to talk to Walter and he was just so caught up with his own world that Ruth did not matter right there and then. (pg1000) Mama was talking to Walter and telling him “Son-I think you ought to talk to your wife.” Walter, “I can talk to her later- Mama, look”. Mama goes on interrupting him and starts getting a bit annoyed at her son Walter. To Walter nothing is more important to him then opening up the liquor store. He is blinded by everything else that he is losing track of his family. Ruth came out of the bedroom and said, “I got something to talk to you about, Walter” and Walter replied, “That’s too bad.” Which upset Ruth and made her so upset to where she stormed back into her room in tears. Mama just was not going to let this get by on Walter. She was determined to get through to her child no matter what it took. Mama decided to come right out and tell Walter what it was that Ruth was trying to tell him. Mama, “Son-do you know your wife is expecting another baby?” Walter in disbelief on what he just heard and stays silent for a few seconds. He then storms out of the house because he has to clear his head. Walter did not show any emotion to hearing the news
