Change from Knowledge Throughout a persons life, experiences shape the way a person views the world by teaching them important lessons, even when the knowledge is not directly noticed at first. It is important for people learn, the knowledge learned is applied to life and affects a persons decisions and choices. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, Walter Younger is one of the main characters who is hard to get along with, immature, and believes money is the answer. As the play goes along, Walter Younger changes and rises to manhood because of the way knowledge has changed him. Walter Younger is first described as a typical man who wants to provide for his family. However, he seems to care more about money than his family in the beginning of the play. Walter and the Youngers are impoverished and underprivileged. He believes that money will solve his family’s problems, and that everything will be different in a positive way. But, as his obsession with their financial status grows, he begins to become more detached from his family since they do not have the same views he has. He constantly talks and complains about money. He starts fights with everyone in his family and is blinded by money and what it could bring. …show more content…
She dreams and studies to become a doctor, but Walter repeatedly mocks her dreams and makes her feel as though they are unrealistic. He tells her, “Why couldn't you just become a nurse or get married like other women.” This therefore proves that he does not want her to become a doctor because her dream is expensive and is agains the social norm. He discourages his own sister and what she believes in because he is blinded by money and the idea of it. He does not show much respect for his sister because he is tied up with the idea of getting money so he can get his wife and son gifts.
