Courage can be defined as a quality of mind or soul a person holds to help them face and overcome trouble, danger, and pain, despite their own personal fears. Courage is an important but sometimes difficult trait to uphold. In 'Cue for Treason', Geoffrey Trease displays immense courage throughout a variety of different characters. Doing insane physical measures, fighting for what is morally right, and standing up for oneself are just some acts of courage that have been demonstrated in the novel. Peter, Kit, and the Desmonds show the significance of not letting fear hold one back, especially when it comes to protecting those they love.

A leading moment well shown for Kit's courageousness is when she saves her friend, Mr. Desmond, from drowning in a river after knocked unconscious by his horse. "As it was, it took all our combined strength to steer him to the bank, and get him out" (90). This tells how urgent and serious the situation is for Mr. Desmond and for Kit. However, Kit does not hesitate to dive into the water to rescue Mr. Desmond from additional trauma. This act of Kit is valiant as there was a risk of harm to herself and risk of revealing her real identity. Another time where courage is evident is when Kit saved Peter from the group of miners. While travelling through the Virgin Mines, Peter and Kit are captured by Redhead and unruly miners who are to steal their horses and money. Kit manages to break through the miner's barricade, leaving Peter behind. Kit makes the brave, selfless move of going back for Peter. "Again Kit ignored my advice. She argued afterward that there was no help she could hope to fetch, and in those circumstances she wasn't going to leave me" (253). While doing this she is taken off her horse and is also captured. This is very courageous because she tries to save Peter, despite the immense risk to herself. When Peter was assigned to travel back to Cumberland as a secret agent with Tom Boyd to investigate the peel tower, …show more content…
A courageous act presented by the Desmonds is when they allow Peter to join their theater troupe, even though they know that Peter is considered a fugitive and is being hunted down by Sir Philip. "No one can accuse my company of knowingly harboring a fugitive from justice" (55). It is very courageous of Mr. Desmond to say he will not allow Sir Philip to punish him for assisting Peter. Sir Philip is far more powerful than the Desmonds, but Mr. Desmond still overlooks the situation and welcome Peter to join their troupe. Another significant example of the Desmonds demonstrating courage, is when a group of four men insist to examine the back of the theater troupe's wagon to look for runaway child, while Peter hides himself among the baggage. "I could not let them all go to jail for me, and that was what it would mean in the long run, since no jury would believe the word of vagabond actors against that of the local gentry" (59). This explains how precarious it was for the Desmonds to be caught lying. The Desmonds act of hiding Peter in the wagon among the actor's luggage is truly courageous because if they are caught, no jury would find the Desmond's innocent, according to Peter. One other occasion of courage is when the Desmonds and his acting troupe help Peter and Kit outrun Sir Philip by acting as the Queen's
