Atticus shows that if he did not defend Mr. Robinson with everything, he would lose all respect for himself and not have the authority to even tell his children what is right and wrong. When Scout inquires why he would defend a black man Atticus replies, “If I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head up in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem to not do something”(100). Atticus says this to show that cheating a person out of his rights despite his or her skin color is an appalling thing to do, so he chooses to do the right thing and defend Mr. Robinson. This allows him no matter the verdict, to say he tried his best to defend his client despite his race. This influences Scout because it shows her the gravity of the case and future effects it can have on a person.…

”’(Lee 110) Atticus became a victim of racism. Because Atticus was defending a black man, his own family discriminated him, saying he tarnished their family name, the reason being that, although Atticus was not black, he was a social taboo. He associated himself with a black person which was a horrible thing to do during the time, because of racist and prejudice assumptions about black people. This is further evident when Jem and Mrs. Dubose had a conflict between them, as Scout describes ’Jem said softly “She [Mrs. Dubose] said you [Atticus] lawed for niggers and trash.”’…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…

Firstly, Atticus was teased by kids due to defending Tom through his children. In fact, a boy at school, Cecil Jacobs announced that, “Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers” (99) and, at Aunt Alexandra house, Cousin Francis said, “Grandma says its bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger-lover” (110) ,and keeps bothering Scout by saying “nigger-lover” many times eventually causing a fight. The true purpose of the kids saying these things is, because the society doesn’t accept that a white man can defend a black man, since they’re racist, so they tell their children, and that causes them to bother Jem and Scout. Besides the children, some adults even were very rude as well to Atticus due to the case. One particular person that used to bother Jem and Scout was Ms.Dubose, and while she is insulting the children she says, “Your fathers no better than the nigger and trash he works for” (135).…
