How Does Tom Robinson Present Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird

Racism is not as common today as it was back in the 1900’s. Most of the racism was aimed towards Minorities by Caucasian Americans. Racism in the early 1900’s was extremely common. However, many now look down upon the thought of racism and despise the idea. Minorities are not rejected in society anymore and instead are recognised and treated as equals. The impact of the class structure and prejudice portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird’s Maycomb County was very evident in the trial of Tom Robinson. He was sentenced to death for a crime that he did not commit because of the strict class system and prejudice of the town.
The most obvious victim of racism in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was Tom Robinson. Tom was considered to be a part of the lowest class in Maycomb. He was a black man that was accused of raping Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella Ewell. In the book he was portrayed as a hard-working, warm hearted man who would help others in need. Bob Ewells was one of the trouble makers in the town and accused Tom of raping Mayella. Tom was brought in front of a very prejudice jury that consisted of all Caucasians. She now had to raise her children, keep her house in order and make a living on her own. Since she was a black woman, and the wife of an accused husband who raped a white woman, she had a very difficult time finding work. The only person who would give her a place to work was Tom’s former employer, Mr. Link Deas. This was all because of the white community in Maycomb being racists towards the blacks. However, it was hard for Helen to get away from all the racism. One morning on her way to work, Bob Ewell followed her and cusses at her, for no reason but that she is black and Tom’s widow.
