How Does Tobacco Affect Tetrahymena

Abstract: The Effects of Tobacco on Phagocytosis of Tetrahymena. Lania Ellis, 2014, 102 Student Center Dr.
Tobacco may have a negative effect on phagocytosis of Tetrahymena. The effect tobacco had was looked at during the experiment where tobacco was added to Tetrahymena’s food. A control solution without tobacco was used in order to be able to tell if the tobacco made something change. The tobacco ended up negatively effecting the Tetrahymena because it caused the Tetrahymena to eat less, and slower. In conclusion the tobacco did in fact have a negative effect on phagocytosis of Ietrahymena.
Introduction: Tetrahymena are ciliated protest that are found in freshwater, and are also single celled. Tetrahymena are able to live in different

The reason why the tetrahymena ate more when there was not tobacco was because the tobacco made it harder for them to eat, by inhibiting the cilia from putting the food into their mouth. It makes since that the tobacco would inhibit it because in humans the tobacco makes breathing harder, and that’s what causes smokers to cough. My hypothesis was right because the tobacco did in fact have a negative effect on phagocytosis of Tetrahymena by causing it to eat less. Some problems that I may have encountered while doing the experiment was making sure not to kill the Tetrahymena. In order to solve that problem the slide covers had to be put on very slow and gentle. Another problem that was encountered was the Tetrahymena moving too fast while looking into the microscope. Glutaraldehyde was put in the solution to stop the Tetrahymena from moving. A problem we faced was there not being enough Tetrahymena. In order to make sure we had enough of everything, the measurements of everything that was used was cut in half. The centrifuge tubes had to stay open the whole time, and that was another problem because it was tempting to close them and put them down. Some future questions that I would have for this experiment are; how would any type of drug effect phagocytosis of Tetrahymena? Would the results of the experiment change if I had different

The experiment was easy to conduct in the classroom because of cost, storage, and upkeep of the animal. A downside of the conduction of this experiment would be how it occurred in a classroom which lessons the dependability of the results because of exposure. Another upside would be the size of the organisms, allowing shocking to be easier. A downside to this would be the size because it makes stem cell research harder in comparison because of a number of similarities between planaria and humans is scarce.…

In one petri dish I used 15ml of pure distilled water (the typical environment of daphnia) as my control to look back on and compare to my experimental group my altered variables. In my three other dishes I started with 15 ml of pure water, 2-3 daphnia, and introduced 2 ml of harmful substance ( Prestone :antifreeze,Bayer Advanced: pesticide, and Malaboro :cigarette ash). After exposing the daphnia to these chemicals, I observed each petri dish and studied the change in behavior, appearance, and function every five minutes over a time span of a half an hour. I rated the change on a scale of 0 to 5. 1 being death, 3 being normal, and 5 being change in behavior and appearance.…

2010). Phellinus linteus (P. linteus), Phellinus gilvus (P. gilvus) and P. baumii are medicinal mushrooms belonging to the Hymenochaetaceae basidiomycetes family (Hwang et al. 2004), which is a source of many antitumor or immunostimulating polysaccharides and has been utilized in medicine for many human diseases in several Asian countries (including Korea) for a long time. A research regarding P. linteus demonstrates that it possesses antitumor(Kim et al. 2004), immunomodulating(Kim et al. 2004), antibacterial(Hur et al. 2004), antiangiogenic and antioxidant activity(Song et al. 2003). Furthermore, recent studies have shown that many other genera of Phellinus (e.g. P. baumii, P. gilvus and P. igniarius) also have potent pharmacological activities (Jang et al. 2004; Hwang et al. 2005; Lee et al. 2010).…

Upon research, scientists have concluded that using tobacco products damages cells. The damaged cells become mutated and form cancer cells. The author goes on to explain, “Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer” (Harms of Smoking and Health Benefits of Quitting). These harmful chemicals develop many different types of cancer.…
