Oedipus Rex and The Kite Runner both include examples of irony to help develop major themes within the stories. They also both include moments of anagnorisis within the stories. Authors will sometimes use irony and anagnorisis to help better the stories to move them in the right direction. My goal during this essay is to identify examples of irony and anagnorisis to show how they were used for both Oedipus Rex and The Kite Runner. There are different types of irony that can help develop themes in a story these types include situational, dramatic, and verbal. Each type means something different to help add to the stories. Oedipus Rex uses irony to develop some of it’s major themes throughout the play. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus says “ And I pray, if he should be known to me and share in my hearth among my family that I suffer all that I call upon these” ( Oedipus 255). This specific quote would be an example of dramatic irony because he expects that he puts a curse on the killer which in fact he does only to learn that he is in fact the killer and has put a curse on himself in the end. This is the part where the anagnorisis will be identified in both stories. The first story to have the anagnorisis identified will be Oedipus Rex. An example of an anagnorisis is when Oedipus finds out the truth about everything in his life and what happened so long ago. This is when the theme truth plays its role. Oedipus finds out he is his father’s killer and he placed a curse on himself. Not only that but he finds out that his mother was in fact his wife whom he had kids with. All this helps to lead to the resolution of who he is and what his future holds for him. Which is that his wife kills herself and he had stuck pins in his eyes but through all that the pollution was lifted to restore the city and thus the story ends. The next thing is to identify the anagnorisis in The Kite Runner and how it helps people to get to some of the major themes. The anagnorisis in The Kite Runner is when Amir risks everything to save Sohrab. This leads to the resolution not only because he realizes what he must do but throughout his life leads up to him being a tragic hero. Most of his life he did not stand up for himself or others being Hassan. Like the night Hassan found the kite Amir wanted but was jumped and things happened and Amir saw this but never said anything. Amir could not forgive himself for never saying anything but this all leads up to when he finally realizes that it’s time to do
