Many characters change throughout their stories and The Giver is not an exception. Throughout this story the protagonist Jonas changes with the new challenges he faces. In The Giver, Jonas changed over the course of the novel by showing fear, expressing interest over new ideas, and of ultimate understanding of the society he lives in. To begin with, Jonas shows his first emotion fear at becoming the new Receiver of Memory. In chapter 9 it states that Jonas “remembered uneasily what the Chief Elder had said about the pain that would come with his training. She had called it indescribable.¨ (Lowry, pg 70).
