Character characterization can be direct or indirect. Direct characterization is when the author describes a character in a way that the author is just telling the reader flat out. Indirect characterization is when the author uses actions and thoughts to describe a character. Characterization is an essential writing tool because it keeps the reader engaged in what they are reading. The reader has to really analyze the text to make sense of what that character is like or how they are. In the exhilarating poem of “Macbeth” the main character Macbeth is very interesting and has a strong personality. The author used indirect characterization to describe Macbeth’s character which was very unique, however it was very difficult to understand.
